On Thursday the girls football team took part in a Club Doncaster Foundation tournament against other schools from around Doncaster. The winners of the tournament would go through to represent Doncaster Rovers in the regional finals. The games lasted 8 minutes and each team played each other once and the top four went through to the semi-finals.
The team got off to a slow start drawing the first match against Outwood Danum 0-0. A lapse in concentration meant the second game against Hungerhill was lost 1-0. After another 0-0 draw against Rossington, the team’s luck started to turn as they beat a strong Armthorpe A 1-0. This was then followed by a 2-1 win against Trinity and another 1-0 win against Armthorpe B. Goals from Lexie O’Donnell and excellent play from Lucie Thompson and Lily Scott meant the team had a chance to progress. Their final group game was against the strongest team, Selby High. Excellent defending by Kenzie Salmon, Isla Dawson and Cadie Pickering meant the team drew 0-0 and progressed into the semi-finals.
Trinity were the semi-final opponents and again the score was 0-0 so the game went to penalties. An outstanding performance by goal keeper Alicia Olsen (saving two penalties!) and superb penalties by Lexie and Lucie meant the girls were in the final! Selby High were the opponents and after a tense match the game ended in a draw – penalties again! Confident from the semi-finals, Alicia saved one penalty and Lexie and Lucie scored again – the girls were champions! A fantastic effort by all the team and they now look forward to the regional finals in January.
