We follow the AQA specification for Art Textiles. This course aims to provide students with a broad foundation in Textiles, promoting the individual and creative development of students’ work. Art Textiles offers a varied and creative approach to fabric development generated by an understanding of professional contexts including fashion, interior design and accessory design. An exploration of surface pattern, texture and material construction processes enable students to develop a creative portfolio of work. Students explore visual information to develop creative investigations into textiles and fashion. Experimentation into techniques and processes includes print, stitch, dye, embroidery, weave and garment construction, to develop an understanding of shape, form, pattern, texture and colour. All practical work is supported by critical analysis of relevant sources. Students are encouraged to visit exhibitions and galleries in order to gather primary and secondary research. Research methods including drawing, photography and fabric manipulation will also be used to generate a wealth of ideas. Students’ diverse and individual approaches can be realised in a variety of outcomes including fine art textiles, fashion design, illustration and textile design. Establishing confidence and skillfulness with a variety of textile processes is key to the course.

AQA Art Textiles. The course consists of 60% coursework (component 1) and 40% practical exam (component 2-externally set assignment).

Initially students will complete their portfolio of work which will cover a broad range of advanced textile techniques and drawing media. Alongside this pupils will carry out independent research into the work of artists and designers to support and inspire their drawn and practical elements. Students will then begin to develop their own work with guidance from teachers to ensure they achieve the necessary criteria. In Year 13 students undertake a personal investigation. Initially a project title will be selected through discussion with their teachers which will then be investigated and developed by the student. At the end of Year 13 there is an externally set assignment.

The Textile department visits the Knit and Stitch Exhibition annually which includes careers seminars for those wishing to gain insight into the progression opportunities within Fashion. We also offer trips throughout the year which usually includes a residential.

We have an excellent track record of our students successfully gaining places at prestigious universities and colleges for a wide range of courses including Textile Design (both print and structured), Fashion Design, Costume Design and Fashion Communication type courses.
