I began my NQT year at Hall Cross Academy in September 2013

I began my NQT year at Hall Cross Academy in September 2013, teaching in the large mathematics department. I was keen to learn as much as possible and develop my knowledge and skills. Hall Cross was the perfect place to do this. They encouraged me to get involved with initiatives across the school and other external CPD opportunities. Hall Cross allows me to be the teacher I want to be rather than conforming to a particular way of teaching.
Whilst in my third year the position of Head of Key Stage 3 Mathematics became available. I applied and was successful. I became part of the Lower School Leadership team and I was able to hone my management skills and learn about leadership, not just on a departmental level but also at a whole school level. The following year I was given the opportunity to be Head of Key Stage 4 mathematics, which was a huge learning curve. I had to direct the department through the curriculum changes and ensure we were successful at enabling our students to make good progress. After a successful first year with the new GCSE I was then offered the role of Associate Head of Mathematics. I am now able to make changes that impact upon the whole department with a view to raising the standards even higher.
Although I have had TLR responsibilities I have always been able to get involved in extra-curricular opportunities such going on residential trips for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
