On Wednesday 19th June, 20 Year 7 and 8 boys took part in an afternoon workshop with Miss Layte and Mr Dougherty. The premise was to encourage boys to explore physicality as a means of communication and appreciate the breadth of skills that ‘the arts’ covers.
After a physical warm up, the boys took some time to write phrases about what it means to be a ‘man’, the stereotypical phrases they hear about manliness or criticisms they have ever received because they have not ‘conformed’ to the expectation. There were some really insightful comments.
We then spent some time teaching lifts, exploring physical movements and learning a set phrase all inspired by their words. Once we had created a range of material, working with the boys, we then began to shape into a performance. Have a look at the video to see what we managed to create from scratch in an hour and a half.
We’re hoping that we can do some future work around physical literacy as a possible research project following on from this workshop session. As we were so impressed by the group, we have decided that we are going to create a new performance company called ‘Evolve’ and that we can get them to join Delanté Détras Theatre Company in being part of The National Theatre Connections Festival next year, so that ICA Perform @ Hall Cross Academy produces two newly commissioned performances. Fingers crossed we are both accepted.
