About the Course

Food Technology is about the conversion of raw material into edible food products using designing and making skills.  You will investigate the food industry to gain understanding of commercial food production.  By the end of the course you will have:
Developed high level practical skills and made food products regularly
Acquired working knowledge of food science and nutrition, the scientific principles of food handling and how the food industry operates.

This new GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is an exciting and creative course which focuses on practical cooking skills to ensure students develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials.  At its heart, this qualification focuses on nurturing students’ practical cookery skills to give them a strong understanding of nutrition.

Exam Board

Exam: 1 hour 45 minutes 50% of GCSE Non-exam Assessment: 50% of GCSE Food Investigation: A report of between 1500-2000 words which explains the findings of the investigation undertaken Food Preparation Assessment: A Portfolio showing evidence of research and analysis of the task.  Evidence of trialling dishes and recipes in order to produce a three course menu suitable to meet the task Examination Board: AQA

Your Future

A Food qualification can lead to a range of career opportunities within the food industry – such as food technologist, dietetics and sports nutrition, hotel and catering management, retailing, as well as the many careers related to food production.  It will also train you in a variety of skills from decision making to problem solving and team work – all of which are important life skills.  This course can be continued in the Sixth Form as we have both AS and A2 courses in Food Technology.
