Daily Contact Tracing

08 April 2021

Dear parent,

I trust you are well and have enjoyed a pleasant Easter break so far.

Before the Easter holiday, I applied for the school to be part of a pilot called ‘daily contact testing’. We found out last week that we have, with 99 other schools, been successful.

What this means

When we have a positive case in school, all close contact students can remain in school, providing you agree to them being tested each morning for 7 days. The positive case will, of course, have to isolate for 10 days as normal.

How does it work

When a positive case is made known to the school, for example through home testing, we will be asked to tell the research team those students who are taking part in the study.

Staff and students who are identified as close contacts will be asked to perform a test on school days for 7 consecutive days (if the 7th day falls on a weekend, day 7 tests will be required on the Monday). This will be a Lateral Flow Test (LFT); in addition, on days 2 and 7, a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test will also be performed.

Students who test negative will be able to remain at school. The guidance does ask that students isolate in the evenings and at weekends in lines with government guidance.

Does my child have to take part?

This is a purely voluntary trial. We will only test students if you give your consent on the Consent Form.
If you do not want your child to take part please do not fill in the form.

Students who are not registered will be required to isolate if they are in close contact with a positive case as has been the case previously. They will need to isolate for 10 days.

What will happen to my data?

The data you provide will be sent to NHS track and trace, as previously, they will then share it with the Department of Health and Social care. They are responsible for the study.

Finally, I know that many of you, like your children, have been frustrated by the need to isolate over the last 7 months. The sight of some year 10 and 7 students having to be sent home a week after returning to school post lockdown was heartbreaking.

I hope that this trial will begin to see an end to this for many students.

Kind regards,

Simon Swain
